Top Tips for New Denture Wearers

Did you know that a third of Canadians do not have dental insurance? This resulted in more than one in five Canadians avoiding dental care because of the cost in 2018.

If you are one of the lucky few who have dental coverage, then you would be able to easily get dentures for your mouth. That's good news because dentures are useful in so many ways - but only if you use them correctly.

Keep reading for top tips for new denture wearers like yourself.

TREAT YOUR DENTURES AS YOU WOULD YOUR TEETH

Just like you would want to have a good daily hygiene routine for your teeth, the same applies to your dentures as well. Make sure that you brush them daily, as they can get stained and develop tartar and bacteria.

Also, remember to brush your mouth, gums, cheeks, and tongue with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste every day before you put your dentures in. This will help prevent fungal infections, gum irritations, and bad breath.

SOAK THEM DAILY IN A DENTURE CLEANSER

Don't wear your dentures at night, give your mouth a break for at least 6-8 hours every day. This will help it heal from any soreness and irritation experienced. While your dentures are out, soak them in a denture cleanser that will remove any germs and bad bacteria residing on your dentures.

Rinse the dentures properly before putting them back in your mouth the next morning. You don't want any denture cleansers inside your mouth. Also, you could store your dentures in warm water, or a solution approved by your dentist overnight.

CUT YOUR FOOD INTO SMALL PIECES

Here's how to eat with dentures. Cut your food into small pieces when consuming it. Also, avoid hard and sticky foods, as they can get stuck to your dentures and harm their structural integrity.

Foods like nuts or hard candies can also loosen your dentures. Take extra care with hydration since denture wearers easily suffer from dry mouth, and your dentures are prone to drying out as well.

GO FOR REGULAR DENTURE CHECKUPS

If you feel like your dentures aren't sitting right or if there's something wrong with them, don't try to fix the problem at home. Visit your local denturist right away. There's no point in delaying and having to spend more time or money fixing the problem later down the road.
